The atomic cruiser USS Long Beach was the first nuclear powered ship in the world. She was able to travel 360,000 sea miles at a speed of 20 knots without needing to take on fuel. She went into service in September 1961. The crew numbered 1,150. Equipped with what was then most advanced guided missile systems, for a long time she held pioneer status for this new type of powerplant. For defensive purposes there were two Terrier launch systems, a Regulus launcher amidships and a Talos battery aft.
